20yo GS12
A guy recently onboarded at my office as a GS12 with 1 year of FEMA Corp and a couple months as a FEMA reservist. He was right out of high school prior to joining FEMA Corp, and he has no other relevant experience and no degrees. I’m a vet (15+ years active duty) and struggled to get in with FEMA, I’ve been with the agency for almost 3 years now, started as a 9 and I’m now an 11. I have talked to the guy a couple of times and he seems like a good guy, but I’m confused about the choice to hire him (name request) at a GS12 level. Is this common?
Edit: one time speaking with him he did say that he worked with his now current supervisor on a FEMA Corp project and they helped him with his resume to qualify for the 12 position.
Edit 2: I spoke with the kid at lunch today about how he got to where he is, as some of the replies stated he is not in a GS position, but an IC12 instead (I cannot change the title). He told me that FEMA corp does a hiring fair-type event that helps members get jobs and he was offered a couple reservist positions and an IC9 position at at different office. After being advised to do so by his current supervisor, he turned down the IC9 position to be a reservist and work with the supervisor to help him write his resume in a way that would qualify to name request him for the IC12 position. Before joining FEMA corp he worked food service for about a year. Also wanted to add I’m not necessarily upset about the situation, it’s a great place for him to be at 20, I just wish I could have pulled off the same thing at his age.
