I noticed that some gas stations have turned off their air pumps. Is there a reason behind this?

So, I was trying to fill up my car’s gas tank, and guess what? Every gas station I checked in mid-town and Brookside had an air pump that wasn’t working. When I asked them about it, they said they turn it off below freezing because it doesn’t work. Can you believe that? What do you think about that?
