Pushpa 2 - a commercial success that signals dark times coming in Indian movie industries
To this day I genuinely cant believe this movie is setting the records its setting. i understand some audience members go to movies to be purely entertained but is there not a limit to that? Pushpa as a whole disappointed me so much for a few reasons -- and I cant understand why others dont see this.
1) Gangamma jathatra sequence - I get that some folks are familiar with the history and context here, but the neutral audience may not. And they do not explain until AFTER the entire Jathara dance. Kantara could hit so hard since we knew the emotion behind it. But the entire powerul portrayal by AA of the dance was not given context to until AFTER the entire scene, where he explains to Srivalli! He just disappears into getting ready for the dance/prayer. And by then any neutral audience would feel emotional whiplash going straight into a romantic song.
2) Fafa - this character purely existed to get beat down by Pushpa. The entire build up to P1 ending was the fiery fight between Fafa and Pushpa. Yet we got a purely one sided beatdown where Fafas most impactful scene was his intro. Are we this accepting of an audience? I guess we are...
3) Every background character - literally every character was useless in P2. Even Anasuya who I thought would be a powerful character had no impactful moments aside from being humiliated. What was the point of her confronting Sunil in P1? What was the purpose of Sunil??
Of all things in the movie, the most rewarding arc was from the Pushpa/Srivalli dynamic. Whether its the songs or Rashmikas performance, all really worked for me. But how are people satisfied with the movie as a whole? Srivalli was nowhere near the main point of P1, with such other major plot points being ignored in P2. I genuinely feel that P2 collecting this much money over just sequel hype will have Salaar 2, Devara 2, Kalki 2, and even upcoming LCU movies be just huge cash grabs and nothing else... This movie is a clear case study that expectations do not exist in the Indian box office past star worship.
