What is the purpose of mid-level heat/cold resistance?

This is a question I've wondered since Breath of the Wild. As we all know Link can equip himself with specific clothing to increase his resistance to a certain temperature, which adds one level of resistance per piece worn. You only need to have two pieces of clothing worn to get the maximum cold/heat resistance (as there are only two notches to fill on the pause menu); wearing all three is just for the set bonus.

However, recipes aren't as straightforward. Depending on your ingredients you will produce either "low-level", "mid-level", or "high-level" resistance in a meal or elixir. Low-level can substitute the need to have one piece of resistant clothing equipped, and high-level is the equivalent of max resistance to that element.

So what does mid-level even do? What's the point of having mid-level resistance when its not enough to survive in intense temperature areas but is also excessive in areas where low-level resistance is enough? Does anyone have any insight on this mechanic?
