Support after a recent attack | Student, new to USA.

I’m reaching out here because I recently went through a traumatic experience and could really use some support and advice. About four days ago, I was attacked during a robbery attempt and ended up with a black eye, redness inside my eye, an orbital fracture, and a sinus fracture. Thankfully, the attacker is now in jail, but I’m left dealing with the aftermath of this incident.

I moved to the USA this January 2024 and don’t have any family or friends here. During the attack, the assailant tried to rob me of my phone. At one point, I even offered him my phone and whatever he wanted, but he wasn’t interested in taking it. Instead, he threw it far away and started yelling racial slurs at me, saying things like ‘you f Indians are everywhere’ and other hateful remarks.

The physical pain is hard enough, but the emotional toll of being isolated during this time and facing such hostility is even tougher. I’m following up with my doctors and taking all the necessary steps to heal, but I can’t help but feel overwhelmed and anxious.

I’ve been paying for the medical expenses out of pocket since I don’t have insurance here. I’ve heard that there might be social welfare workers or organizations that help cover medical bills for crime victims. If anyone has information on this or knows where I can seek assistance, I would be incredibly grateful.

If anyone has been through something similar or has advice on how to cope with the loneliness, fear, and trauma that comes with such an experience, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m looking for any tips on managing the physical recovery as well as the emotional side of things.

Thank you all in advance for your kindness and support.

PS: I live in Clearwater, incident happened in Clearwater.

Edit1 : 08 July, 2024. I met this facial surgeon today at around 11 AM. It was my 2nd appointment. The way he acted, he looked like a racist to me. He first asked me if it(the attacker) was a black guy, when I said no, he was shocked. When i told him about the attacker being a racist, this doctor laughed it off. I haven’t spoken a word with anyone since this meeting.

Edit2: 09 July, 2024. My school isn’t in Florida; it’s in South Carolina. I fly there once every 2-3 months. My course is online-based, so I didn’t involve the school in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Edit3: 20 July, 2024. Can i add a gofundme link here?
