How did Superman build the Fortress of Solitude and do you prefer it that way?

In some continuities the Fortress of Solitude is something Superman built on his own rather than a piece of Kryptonian technology from a crystal.

In these versions of the story how did Superman build the Fortress? It's filled to the brim with advanced technology and it's not like he's Batman. Where would Superman acquire these items?

I'd also like to know if you prefer the Fortress as Kryptonian technology or as a creation of Superman.
