Movie Recommendation/Discussion: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Recently watched this movie on Netflix and feel like many other Omori fans may appreciate it too for it’s themes on repressing/removing memories and largely taking place inside MC’s mental world.

I also think the dynamics of the lead couple parallels those of Aubrey and Sunny (to crudely simplify: passionate impulsive girl vs withdrawn and inhibited guy). What I love about Joel and Clem is that they’re not “sanitized” like most Hollywood characters, but feel like real, messy people. Both their wholesome moments and fights feel authentic.

I like to imagine an adult Sunny and Aubrey would look quite similar to Joel and Clem, although their relationship would undoubtedly be a lot more stable and peaceful. I do think that Aubrey and Sunny should be mindful of similar (just less extreme) clashes in their personalities occurring, as seen in the other couple.

Both Aubrey and Sunny are flawed, emotionally stunted individuals and I’m sure that (even ignoring the full complexities of the Omori-story) their relationship will be full of bumps and occasional conflicts in spite of their deep love and connection. But I think that may be the very appeal of their dynamic, it makes it real.

I’d definitely recommend this movie to you guys and would love to hear how you think Aubrey x Sunny compare and contrast to Clem x Joel!
