Leaving puppy alone for a few hours

I have an 8 week-old golden retriever who is laid back, but prefers to have people around during the day. We will be out for about 4 hours on Sunday and can’t take him with us. He has a crate for sleeping in at night and we also just got a pen. What should our set up and expectations be when we leave and is it ok to be gone that long?
