About the item Leftovers

In the game, the icon for Leftovers is a half eaten apple. Does this mean that at the end of every turn, the pokemon that's holding Leftovers is taking teeny tiny bites out of the half eaten apple? Why not give them a full apple? Why are we so cruel to them?
