Stop telling foreigners with rhotic accents to pronounce the name of our city as 'Mel-bun'. For them, it should be 'Mel-burn' (just not 'Mel-born').

People with rhotic accents are those who pronounce all the 'R's - so basically, most US and Canadians, Irish, English West Country, Scottish, Barbadians, Philippinos and loads of others who've learned English as a second language.

Pronouncing 'Melbourne' as 'Mel-bun' works in our non-rhotic accent, but since the name of the city contains an 'R', those who do pronounce all their 'R's should be pronouncing it - it just sounds straight-up inconsistent and wrong when they don't.

'Mel-born', on they other hand, is definitely wrong. So I contend that the correct way for rhotic speakers to pronounce the name is 'Mel-burn'. Please let them know this.

edit: Yeah, fuck all yaz downvoters. Did you even read the post body or give it even half a thought?
