Kid Proof Table Restoration

My kitchen table is in need of refinishing. Bought it used and scratched and my kids added some more scratches of their own. Now that they’re a little older, I can finally refinish it. Planning to strip it, sand it, stain the top, paint the legs, and seal it.

What’s the best sealant to use that will make the table durable enough to withstand daily use for meals, homework, arts & crafts, etc. I’m sure asking them to use coasters will be a losing battle so I’m concerned about scratch and water protection as well.
