Is Hill Assist Control a waste of time?

2022 Hyundai i10.

Last year for the first time in my life I got a new-ish car with lots of features I've never had before. Most I've found helpful but the one I was looking forward to the most has not lived up to expectations!

Don't know if it's the same with all cars, but mine only engages on VERY steep hills. Fair enough, but my issue is that it's not possible to tell whether HAC is going to kick in or not, until AFTER you've taken your foot off the foot brake (with no gas as that would deactivate it), at which point HAC will either activate if the hill is steep enough and the footbrake will stay down, or the car will roll back.

It's almost as if you have to 'try it out' by taking your foot off the brake to see if it will kick in but that's not the kind of thing you can do when someone's sitting 2 cm behind you on a hill! So I tend to ignore it and do my usual hill start, using handbrake if necessary. Thus defeating the purpose of having it as it cannot be relied upon.

It would work great if a light came on the dash or an audible beep or something, to let you know it's activated and you're not going to roll.

If you have this feature on your car what is your experience, do you like it or no?
