Why are the mounts useless for anything other than looking cool?

This is my first time playing D4. I’m a 207 paragon Spiritborn and I’ve found that I can just run faster than my mount. When I played DAOC back in the day a mount was helpful getting through place to place, but in D4 it just slows me down and gets in the way. Other than the loading screen pics looking cool, what is the mount for?
