How much of a cultural phenomenon were the Scream movies?

I saw a random Youtube video which showed someone hanging out in 1996 and there was Scream merch and its poster. I remember the film and its sequels were on TV a lot in the 2000s. It's interesting to me that a horror schlock franchise got this huge culturally.
