How does one extra degree change the climate so much?

How does the arctic melt so much if its so cold? If its like -30c how are glaciers melting so much? one degree higher than -30 is -29 and that's still well below freezing. I don't get how one degree in temp changes so much because when it changes by one degree in a day you don't notice it. Is there something I'm missing?
