Do people consider you intimidating or unapproachable?
A few months ago, I was in a work meeting with most of the staff present when my manager said something along the lines of, ‘You can talk to your supervisors if you need help or have any concerns.’ She mentioned another supervisor’s name and then mine. As soon as she did, nearly everyone in the room stared at me with a ‘Yeah, right’ look, and some even made sounds of disapproval.
I’ve been told several times by coworkers that I come off as intimidating, mean, or angry, but I’m actually the opposite. In fact, for a while, a coworker who had worked with me for some time jokingly called me a ‘big teddy bear.’ to new people at the job.
I assume it’s because of my tattoos, intense eye contact, non joking demeanor, (unless I’ve been around you for a while) or my nonchalant attitude. Or maybe they’ve identified me as an “Other” and try to avoid me?
I don’t have a strong desire to be liked, but I’m just existing and people develop all these assumptions about me. It’s weird especially when I’ve been there for almost 4 years now.
