Any potential problems if kids take their mother's surname?
My husband has a very common surname (Tan 陈) while mine (Wei 魏) is uncommon. Traditionally for the Chinese, the children will take the father's surname. But since my surname is quite rare in Singapore, we wanted our kids to take my surname.
However, now my husband is having second thoughts cause he's worried about the potential problems it might cause:
Admin problems from doctors and teachers not believing he is the father unless he provide birth cert
If I'm not around, custom officers may think he's a child trafficker since he's a man travelling with kids who don't share his surname
Kids and I facing discrimination when people mistake us as a single mother family (kids getting bullied, workplace discrimination, etc)
Is he is overthinking or are these real concerns? Is it better to follow tradition and have the kids take his surname instead?
Any opinions or personal experiences are appreciated!!
