Went to first ever live game today vs Crawley, it absolutely blew my mind
Heya. I just wanted to share a bit about my Wrexham journey - from no interest, to an insane buzz today. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I had never bought tickets to see a football match live before, and I was never interested in football until the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.
The documentary told stories, and made the game, the team and the town both interesting and accessible. I'd been watching games on and off in previous seasons, but this season I've watched almost every game that I can on TV (when the games are streamed on Now TV). I also visited the racecourse last year and bought a scarf from the gift shop.
Well last week I decided I wanted to go to the Crawley game, as it's relatively near home. Organized with my wife to look after our young kids, and I took my Dad and Brother in law. We drove down, got into the ground after chips and a pint, and we were all buzzing.
When Wrexham scored in the very first minute, we just all went mental, and se thought the game was going to be 10-nil breeze. I don't know where the excitement came from - the atmosphere, the crowd, seeing the players all up close and together, it was amazing. But we continued watching and we saw Wrexham relaxing and getting sloppy. It was a lot of tension to get up from just 1-0. I did caution both my dad and brother in law though, that Wrexham have a habbit of "wrexhaming it up", especially in the final mins & especially away games. Of course they did, and when Crawley scored the equaliser I was proper devastated. I swore a lot lol.
However, a few minutes after the equaliser, Fletcher narrowly missed a header, but we saw every bit, it was so up close. It was so awesome to see. The crowd had been cheering and chanting all game, and I thought it must be all over, because they didn't announce how much ET there was.
Feeling like the day out had just been ruined, last minute, Elliot Lee (my personal favourite player), scored a belter of a goal. Well I, my Dad and brother in law, and the entire crowd just went absolutely insane. I was screaming and clapping and dancing and well, fuck, I don't know to to describe it. It's like totally different to watching all those games on TV. I can't remember a time in years where there was such an intense outburst of emotions, hah! Elliot Lee did his celebration just metres away from us, it was so visceral, so real.
We left the stadium on cloud 9, we were buzzing. I proudly wore my Wrexham scarf as we walked through the Crawley fans back to the car, and we didn't stop talking about the game on the 2 hour drive home.
So yeah, 3/4 years ago I'd never cared about football, had never watched a game to completion, and today I left feeling like I want to go to every game, every week and watch it live. Thanks Wrexham for being an awesome community and club! Up the town!
