Being a Canadian pipe smoker is depressing
Apologies in advance if this post comes across as just complaining!
I'm about a year in to this hobby, and at the point where I'm really interested in going deeper into my pipe smoking journey. So, about a month ago, I put a very small order in on Smokingpipes.com. I only bought two tins that are very difficult to find up here in Canada, but certainly nothing extravagant. . I waited excitedly for almost a month for the package to arrive, only to have it show up today with a $437 duty charge attached. Over ten times the value of the tins. So, I had to refuse the package.
I was prepared to pay duty, and had factored it into my budget. But come on. At this point, I have no idea how to continue on with this hobby at all. The only pipe tobaccos readily available to me are the bulk blends from my local b&m, which are fine, but limited. It seems basically impossible for the average Canadian to pursue pipe smoking as even an occasional hobby, especially in the current economy. It's impossible for me to try even the most basic of brand name blends without dropping close to $100 on a single tin.
Thoughts and/or suggestions would be happily accepted.
