What caused Grizzly bears to evolve into such insane predators?

Was there an apex predator before them that they had to protect themselves from? Was it the surrounding environment? Honestly, it seems like Grizzlies are the crackheads of the animal kingdom who just rage for no reason. Is this an evolutionary thing? Or are they just built like that since forever?
