L-Theanine + 5-MTHF (5mg) Recs for my profile

Hello! I’ve been struggling with anxiety for a long time, and after trying almost every SSRI out there with no success (either they don’t work or the side effects are unbearable), I also tried magnesium glycinate, and it didn’t work either. I recently did a GeneSight test, and after talking with my psychiatrist, I’m now looking at other options.

My Genetic Profile (From GeneSight Report):

  • COMT: Val/Val
  • MTHFR Mutation → Reduced
  • CYP2D6: Poor Metabolizer → Likely why I don’t tolerate most SSRIs well.

What I’m Considering Instead:

  • L-Theanine (100-200mg)
  • 5-MTHF (5mg) – Recommended by my doctor

Looking for Input From Anyone With a Similar Profile:

  • Have L-Theanine or 5-MTHF helped with your anxiety?
  • If you’ve taken 5mg of 5-MTHF, was it too strong (over-methylation symptoms) or beneficial?
  • Would you suggest taking one instead of the other, or do they work better together?

Just looking for real experiences because the research is overwhelming, and I’m running out of options. My doctor recommended 5-MTHF and said L-Theanine could help but didn’t have much to say about it. He recently started me on propranolol, and like the others, I’m experiencing significant side effects.
