gratuitous sexual violence against women in LD+R
i feel like love death and robots is ridiculously voyeuristic when it comes to the female body and pain inflicted on the women. like, just gratuitous shots of breasts and vulvas and graphic descriptions/depictions of sexual assault / rape that border on torture porn.
like in sonnie’s edge: why did we spend so much time hearing about the violent gang rape and subsequent mutilation that sonnie endured to just be told that that story actually doesn’t matter and the protagonist is over it. like, if that was just a red herring you could of come up with a number of motivating events that didn’t involve violent sexual trauma.
and good hunting: in an episode that features so many on screen / alluded sexual assaults and rape (not to mention a women forced into sex work by economic circumstances and then brutally mutilated without anesthesia) you would expect to at least get a little “good for her😊” moment at the end, but no a fade to black right before the attempted rapist gets what he deserves. i get that choice from a stylistic level, but if you weren’t going to show the final revenge moment you shouldn’t of leaned into showing all those ridiculously cruel acts of violence when it was perpetrated on a women (especially when her comeuppance is framed as bittersweet by the audience surrogate).
and as an honorable mention: why does the protagonist is run through the streets naked in “the witness” (btw she’s naked for almost the whole episode) when she could of just tied her robe shut?? this choice by the author doubly doesn’t make sense when you factor in the fact that her pursuer was getting a bj right before he started chasing her but he’s not running through the streets with his dick swinging in the air.
i get that this is a nsfw show so you should expect some hard to watch topics, but there comes a point where choices like these stop making sense in canon and start being the deliberate choices of an author. opinions?
