Jeopardy! discussion thread for Fri., Mar. 7

Here are today's contestants as the show returns to regular play:

  • Roger Ghaman, a TV editor & substitute teacher from Studio City, California;
  • Omar Abu Realh, an aerospace engineer from Annandale, Virginia; and
  • Laura Faddah, a manager from Memphis, Tennessee. Laura is a seven-day champ with winnings of $87,400.

Jeopardy!

NACHO BUSINESS // ANIMALS IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS // "G-U" GOT GAME // STAR WARS // ROGUE ONE// SECRET SERVICE PROTECTION

DD1 - $800 - ANIMALS IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS - Nutkin & his brother Twinkleberry (Omar lost $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Laura -$400, Omar $1,400, Roger $4,000.

Scores entering DJ: Laura $1,800, Omar $800, Roger $3,000.

Double Jeopardy!

EUROPEAN CAPITALS // ALPHANUMERICS // I'M A HOOSIER, BABY // BIBLE B BOYS // EARTH SCIENCE // A HEART IN MY SONG

DD2 - 1,600 - EUROPEAN CAPITALS - These 2 rhyming "B" capitals, each with close to 2 million people, are located about 500 miles apart (Omar lost $2,800 on a true DD.)

DD3 - 1,200 - BIBLE B BOYS - Through his marriage to this woman, Boaz was the father of Obed, the grandfather of Jesse & the great-grandfather of David (Laura dropped $1,800 from her score of $6,200 vs. $3,000 for Roger.)

Low-scoring game in which all three DDs were missed, but Laura didn't lose much on DD3 and held first into FJ at $9,200 vs. $6,600 for Roger and $800 for Omar, who made a gallant late charge to get out of the red.

Final Jeopardy!

SCIENCE FICTION - Name shared by a groundbreaking magazine launched in April 1926 & a TV anthology series that premiered in September 1985

Everyone was incorrect on FJ. Roger decided to make a significant wager of $3,601, allowing Laura to hold on, dropping $4,001 to win with $5,199 for an 8-day total of $92,599.

Final scores: Laura $5,199, Omar $800, Roger $2,999.

Wagering strategy: Since Roger was within two-thirds of Laura's score and Omar was in a distant third, Roger should have considered a bet of $1,400 or less. This would have given him the win when Laura missed while making the conventional cover bet.

Editorial comment: Thanks to plenty of Triple Stumpers and a video category, there were four leftovers at the end of the game. But I won't complain about that, because this is part of the natural ups and downs of gameplay. Sometimes the players struggle more than others, which is what makes the stronger games more interesting when they come along. So despite the low scores and missed wagering clues, I say with all sincerity, welcome back, regular play!

Correct Qs: DD1 - What are squirrels? DD2 - What are Budapest and Bucharest? DD3 - Who was Ruth? FJ - What is "Amazing Stories"?
