The location of the conference
I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, I'm relatively new here and have never posted on Reddit, but there is this one detail about the murder that bothers me, that being the location of the conference. Regardless of who killed BT, I cannot find any information about location for the 2024 investor conference or any previous UHG investor conferences. Obviously, we know the 2024 conference took place at the Midtown Hilton hotel because it was all over the news, but prior to the crime, I cannot find mention of this event taking place at the Midtown Hilton hotel nor can I find information about the location from previous years.
I told my mother about this and she said that she heard healthcare companies were removing this information from their websites after the murder of BT, which I have seen articles that confirm sensitive information, especially about shareholders, investors, and executives, is being removed from the internet. Of course, I had to look into this despite the information potentially no longer being available . That being said, there is a website called Wayback Machine where you can look at screenshots taken from websites on specific days--granted someone has uploaded one. This is important because every announcement of the UHG investor conference has never specified a location. Each announcement says it will take place in New York City on some date, usually late November or early December of that year, beginning at 8 a.m. EST. This is consistent for the last five years, suggesting a pattern that a suspect could follow. But I cannot find any information online about the specific location of any previous UHG investor conferences.
The only mention of a location is in a transcript from the 2023 investor conference. This is from Guru Focus, which I cannot verify in terms of authenticity but they have various transcripts from other UHG events available. I did not purchase access, but the preview allows you to view the introduction to the conference in 2023. Andrew Philip Witty (CEO of UHG) makes a comment that some people mistakenly went to the Sheraton that year, which was not the hotel the conference was being held, and was the cause of the event starting late. This could be taken a number of different ways, one being that this conference was previously held at the Sheraton one year, obviously not 2023, or simply that there have been various locations over time. This implies the location of the UHG investor conference location is not static and subject to change over the years, thus implying there is not a pattern to be followed by someone targeting the executives and investors.
Then I decided to go through several of the top insurance companies in the U.S. and explore information about their investor conferences. Again, this information is not readily available. I looked at Elevance Health Inc. (formerly Anthem), Centene Corp., Humana, CVS Health (including Aetna Health), and Cigna Health. Centene Corp. has a similar announcement to UHG for its investor conference, though it does not mention a city, only saying it will start at 8:30 a.m. EST and "in person attendance is by invitation only." This last quote is not present on the announcement from 2024, which was on December 3, 2024, but there is another announcement on December 5, 2024, after the murder, that the event would be virtual--for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, I cannot find a screenshots for this particular announcement to see if it was changed. CVS has announcements for yearly investor meetings much in the same way, saying it will be held in Boston, Massachusetts beginning at 8:00 a.m. EST and a webcast will be available. It seems to be a standard format at this point--again without mention of specific location. Elevance had an investor conference, with a similar announcement for their event in New York City in 2023, except theirs was in March. They did not have one in 2024. I cannot find a specific Humana investor conference announcement, there are mentions of executives speaking at investment conferences, like Wells Fargo and Stephens, and webcasts available of the previous stockholder conferences. (Side note, and I'm no expert, but allegedly all shareholders--interchangeable with stockholders--are investors according to Google. I would not quote me on that because this is not my area of expertise by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the stockholder conference feels comparable to the investor conferences.) These always seem to be held in Louisville, Kentucky but I cannot find anything more about them.
Finally, I couldn't find anything concrete about Cigna, though you can sigh up to receive investor email alerts so, ostensibly, one could do that and get investor information i.e., location of these conferences. But this is me speculating. On CVS's website, there is also an option to request shareholder information so, again, someone who wanted pertinent information about locations of events could seemingly get it through that avenue. I'm not certain of the background checks or restrictions that are in place or involved with this sort of request, though I would venture to guess you cannot just sign up and immediately have access to all the information. To play devil's advocate, I would think this could be a viable way to get information about healthcare investor conferences. I would imagine something of the sort is available for UHG but it doesn't appear as if the information is given to just anyone.
The reason for this convoluted, long post that I did not intend for is that I would love to know everyone else's thoughts. I keep saying this, but I am not an expert when it comes to any of this, so please go easy on me. I have virtually no knowledge of the healthcare industry nor am I adept at research and investigative work. This is just what I have found in my attempt to understand how this event came to be. LM majored in computer science, so I would imagine he knows far more about the workings of computers and the internet than me, I studied English, so I don't know if my efforts to find information can be compared to what he might have been able to uncover by any stretch of the imagination. But I like to think I'm decent at digging around the internet with unwavering persistence.
To offer another counterargument, in spite of my inability to find information on the internet, my mom believes someone could easily find information about these events by calling the hotel for example and simply asking about their upcoming events. Again, I return to the fact that the name of the hotel was not available on the announcements and, seemingly, based on the 2023 transcript, there were different hotels used over the years so the perpetrator theoretically would not know what hotel to call. Let's be honest, there are a lot of hotels in New York City and no information about previous years' locations, so ultimately no clear pattern to follow. (That I can tell.) Again, this is not to say that it is impossible because there are people who know this information and can be found and can be asked. As a young person (25F) on the internet with no connection to UHG, I cannot find any relevant details and I've been looking on and off for a few weeks. Perhaps if someone desperately wanted this information enough they would call every hotel in New York City asking after events, but, from the CVS announcement, this information seems need to know. There is a website called 10Times that I discovered when trying to locate an event calendar for the Midtown Hilton, which I did not find anything official. The website lists events that take place at various locations like hotels, past and future, and the UHG conference is not listed for the Midtown Hilton. Granted, every event may not be listed but all of this leads me to believe that these conferences and their details are something the people who know are told and that is the end of it.
One could certainly go to NYC in late November, like LM allegedly did, before the conference was announced, betting that this event would take place as it usually does, though that does not seem like a guarantee. Even then, how did they know it would take place at the Midtown Hilton?
If anyone has considered this or found any other information, let me know, because it is bothering me, clearly, both in terms of LM but also the situation as a whole. There seems to be a level of knowledge about BT, his movements, and UHG that is difficult to find but that ultimately allowed for this murder to take place, which I honestly cannot reconcile. How did they know the conference was at the Midtown Hilton? How did they know BT was going to be outside walking across the street from another hotel, when, ostensibly, he should have stayed at the Hilton where his conference was being held? Again, I'm not an expert or an investigator of any kind, just someone interested and looking for answers I fear we may never have.
