Boss NPCs

So i'm new to the game, and got given a task to kill Killa, i've never fought or found a boss NPC, is there something i need to do to trigger, a spawn or do they just spawn on the beginning of the raid?

Do they have any special properties, to them like gear, guns or perks that are different from normal NPCs?
