This community needs to grow up...

Literally.

While the devs are catering to an under-18 audience, the community will never be happy.

The kids don't understand what they have, nor how to make the most of it. Yes, there are exceptions here, but on the whole the example chats I see in this sub from u-18s are ridiculous.

The adults will never be satisfied with a toy made for kids. This has the potential to be, and used to be, such a powerful tool for writing, RP, character design and development, and more, yet it's becoming just a toy.

Not only is the quality of training data poor from interactions with under-18s, they also can't give informed consent for their data to be used for training purposes. As more AI regulations are enforced, this will be cracked down on and hopefully parental consent will need to be proven and not just assumed.

The EU AI Act, which is due to come into force over the next 6 months to 2 years, explicitly mentions in Article 5 that marketing AI apps to exploit the vulnerabilities of minors is illegal. By using data from interactions with minors for training purposes, this could be considered illegal too. Many are campaigning for all gen AI to be 18+ due to the harmful effects it can have on children.

Generative AI, by it's nature, will always have a chance of generating content inappropriate for minors, no matter how strict the moderation is. Parental consent is required for ChatGPT 13+, while Gemini, Copilot and Claude are strictly 18+. If OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and Anthropic recognise this, and their models are far less likely to produce mature content, why don't character.ai?
