Did the Buddha have enemies?
Socrates enraged the Athenian authorities by questioning the gods and was put to death.
Jesus enraged the Jewish orthodoxy for his claims of divinity and enraged the Roman magistrate for his "rabble rousing" and was put to death.
Now the Buddha derided the caste system and proclaimed that god/gods and Vedic cosmology were irrelevant to the spiritual path. Surely he must have hit some nerves and yet lived a long life and died in peace. Was this due to his unrivaled skillfullness or maybe due to ancient India being more open minded with these matters? Were there magistrates in his time that wanted to silence him and his ideas? I've read about monks or Brahmins who thought he was full of it but never about anyone who genuinely wished him harm.
