Meditation question

Been meditating myself for a while, and hoping to go to a 10-day Vipassana retreat early next year. But on my own for now. I'm gradually getting better at staying focused on my breathing for longer periods of time without constant thoughts floating by. Every once in a while though, without meaning to, I'll end up at a point where everything goes away, breath, thoughts, just nothing there. Not asleep or falling asleep. My question is, is that place the ultimate goal of meditation? Or is it some weird distraction from focus that happens? It IS really peaceful, but I'm not sure exactly what's going on. Any input from experienced meditators appreciated.
