Not enjoying bass much anymore
I've just barely hit the 1 year mark of playing. I've learned so much, had a lot of ups and downs, met some cool people, and overall just learned to see and appreciate music and this instrument in a way I never thought possible.
But I've hit kind of a wall the last two months.
I'm only practicing a few times a week, and when I am practicing, its basically just refreshing songs for a gig and then noodling around aimlessly for a bit. My teacher has all these things he wants me to do and build exercises around: circle of fifths, arpeggios, major/minor/pentatonic scales, reading, ear training, etc. It used to be interesting and engaging, but suddenly all that just feels like pulling teeth.
I've got some songs I need to learn for a gig next weekend, but I'm procrastinating like hell to sit down and put them to memory. It just feels like a chore and it's stressing me out.
At the moment, I'm not motivated to do almost anything that involves technical improvement. I want to improve, I know I have so so so much more to learn, but taking the steps towards that feels like it's actively harming my passion for the instrument.
I'm dabbling in digital music production and guitar, but the key word is dabbling. It's not inspiring me to pick up bass more, as I thought it would.
I'm not sure, maybe I just need a change of pace. Sitting in my room doing scales and trying to read sheet music isn't fun anymore. I'm moving to college next month, so maybe joining up some different bands there will allow me to play some new things and write my own compositions.
Thoughts? Anyone else hit a wall like this in the beginning stages?
