How necessary is an SUV?

So this might be a silly question but, my husband and I are preparing to start trying for our first baby and I feel like recently all I’ve seen is people buying a “mom car” when they have their first kid and it’s typically some kind of SUV.

I’m just wondering if anyone has had a sedan with one child and how your experience was? I currently have a Honda Civic that’s extremely reliable and it’s almost paid off. Ideally I’d like to drive that until we decide to have a second baby in like 5+ years lol.
