Talking About My Father's Suicide: A Personal Story
I'm 28 years old and I live in Switzerland. I lost my father 2 month ago (27 september 2024): he committed suicide. For me, my sister and my mom was a complete lightning in the sky.
It was 14.30 of Friday 27 september when the police call me to my work place: they told me to go to them because they have something to say to me. When I arrived there, my mom and my sister were already there, crying. The police woman started to speak: "In the morning, a car was found near the Lugano lake (a lake ~5 km away from my home), with the passenger door open. A body was found a few meters away, with a gun nearby: the body was identified as your father. I'm sorry, but your father is dead".
I started to cry and swearing loudly. They asked us if we suspected anything, but we said no. I was completly destroied by that news. My brain started to think heavily: Why? I only see him the day before: I randomly found him and my mom doing shopping at the mall and he was normal with me.
That night I spend the night thinking and crying...
The day after I wanted answer. So I went to my parents' house and open his laptop. He wrote the password on a post-it, stuck to the screen. On the desktop I found 2 documents:
1) A Microsoft word document called "MY PASSWORD"
2) A Microsoft word document called "APOLOGY LETTER"
I opened the letter and there is the reason: he got scammed with Crypto investments during the summer.
He started doing investments in Crypto in February 2024, with a "woman" meet on the internet. I asked him some question and he told me he already invest +300k and he was doing great (+80k per month) and that he trust these people. I simply told him to be careful... I never asked him again about this topic :(. After some days of investigations, we found out that he invests all his money (more or less 400k) and the "woman" told him to make a big transaction to a bank in England because by doing so he would save on taxes. On July 7th he did so and then an exchange of emails began between him and the mysterious English bank, where he was asked to make a further payment of 100k in order to "unlock" the money. He told them he no longer has money to pay them and that they have to wait, so he has the time to collect them. At the beginning of September he disinvested 100k that he had invested legitimately with the bank and gave it to these people, hoping to release the money. Not hearing any news from anyone anymore, 2 weeks after the payment, he decided to take the car and go to the lake, with his gun in his backpack. In the morning at 9.00 he told my mother that he was going to refuel the car... In reality he headed to the lake, got out of the car, parking it on the side of the road, leaving the passenger door open. He walked a few meters into the water, took the gun out of his backpack, abandoning it in the water. He sat in the water, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
